In the village of Argiroupoli the excavations carried out by the Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities has revealed parts of the ancient city of Ancient Lappa dating from Geometric to the Roman period.
However, most of the finds date back from the Hellenistic and early Roman years, which proves that the city flourished in those periods. Besides, it is known that Lappa was one of the most important cities in West Crete in the Roman age. It was destroyed by Metellus in 68 BC but after 31 BC a new glorious was constructed which had hot springs and its own coin.
Recently a large cemetery of the Roman period has been brought to light at the location Five Parthenes. The rich findings of the excavations, among them two marble statues and a bronze statuette are displayed today in the Archaeological Museum of Rethymno.
